Small brass anchor oil lamp with a clear ribbed shade recovered from a 1907 residence in San Francisco. The anchor lamp is named for its use. A white light is required to be displayed at the tallest mast on all vessels at anchor or under way at night. These oil burning lanterns were made to be lit and hoisted to the top of the mast with one rope tied to the handle and 2 ropes through the brass guides to keep it from swaying as the ship rolled with the sea. This lamp was modified to be wired and accept 1 standard base light bulb. This nautical lamp is a versatile and distinctive addition to coastal-inspired spaces or maritime collections.
5 1/2″diam. x 14″h.
Good condition consistent with its age.
